New Junkmail Service Provides Better Filtering of Email
During the holiday break NSIT will swap the existing Junkmail email filtering system for a new system. The new system, according to many tests, does a much better job of identifying and filtering email. While no system is 100% capable of filtering all spam or avoiding filtering of all good email messages, the new Junkmail performs better than the current system and speeds the delivery of email to user inboxes. It will also eliminate some of the message duplication we've seen over the past few months.
The new Junkmail system has several advantages over the old system in addition to simply being better at catching spam and viruses. For instance, it will catch messages that are addressed to aliases (nicknames) as well as those addressed to CNetIDs.
Another new feature is the ability to release messages from your Junkmail quarantine directly from your inbox, without logging in to a separate Junkmail site. Simply open your quarantine digest email message (sent automatically by the system to your inbox), and use the links in the digest to release messages. You can also control how often you wish to receive the digest.
The Support pages for Junkmail, http://support.uchicago.edu/junkmail, are now being revised and should be ready by the end of the week. These pages will contain more information about the new filter, including answers to such questions as how the new system will affect existing filters, how to use the system to manage your Junkmail settings, and more.
