Save Money by Greening Your Workspace
These days, green is in. By taking a few simple steps and "greening" your desktop, you can conserve energy while saving the green in your wallet for more important things, like books.
Conserving energy means reducing energy consumption while achieving similar production or outcome. Implement one or more of these helpful tips to cut your energy use without sacrificing any of the genius or creativity that flows when you sit down at your desk.
- You can adjust your monitor settings to go to standby instead of a screensaver when your computer detects inactivity. Screensavers might look pretty, but all of those colors on your screen won't do much to conserve energy. The standby mode will turn off your screen but not your computer. Just touch a key when you're ready to start working again, and you're back in business.
- When buying a new PC, look for one that is Energy Star 4.0 compliant or that uses a processor with SpeedStep. These features enable your computer to run with greater energy efficiency. They'll save you money and make your computer less prone to overheating.
- Replace the bulbs around your workspace with compact fluorescent light bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs give you all the brightness of regular incandescent bulbs, but they consume only 1/4 of the energy and last significantly longer. How many University of Chicago students does it take to screw in a light bulb? It doesn't matter. You won't have to worry about that one for a long time.
