Where Have All the Pay Phones Gone?
In light of the tremendous increase in cellular phone usage, demand for public pay phones has dropped dramatically in recent years. As a result, AT&T has announced that it will completely phase out its pay phone services by the end of 2008.
Although NSIT has been removing low-usage pay phones over recent years, we recently disconnected the last remaining pay phones on campus. We have replaced most departmental pay phones with campus public phones based on requests from the departments. The campus public phones allow you to place on campus calls free of charge, as well as toll-free calls or calls using a phone card. University staff members also have the option of requesting an authcode, which allows you to make off-campus calls that are charged to a departmental account. To request an authcode, visit http://nsit.uchicago.edu/services/authcode.
International and domestic cards compatible for use with all public campus telephones are available for purchase at the University Bookstore at 970 E. 58th Street. To request a campus public phone for your department, please email 29100@uchicago.edu, or call 773-702-9100, option 4.
