Good Password Practices are Key to Online Security

Choosing a strong and secure password is incredibly important for maintaining your security online. If your password is easy to guess, someone could quickly gain access to your personal information and accounts, putting you at risk for identity theft.

A password should be fairly long and shouldn't be guessable, but at the same time it should be easy to remember. For advice on creating good passwords, visit the Choose a Good Password page on NSIT's Safe Computing site.

But your job doesn't end once your password is created. Make sure you continue to be vigilant about password security. There are plenty of other password practices that are vital for your security, such as never writing your password down, changing your password frequently, and never providing your password over email to anyone for any reason.

For more tips about maintaining good password practices, read our Choosing a Good Password and Keeping Your Password Secure Tip Sheets.
