Fortify your Computer Against Threats

In keeping your computer safe, a properly secured computer is your first line of defense. There are a few simple steps you can take to make sure your computer is protected.

Updating your operating system is perhaps the most critical and simplest of all the methods for securing your computer. Most desktop security incidents are centered around flaws in the operating system. For instructions on how to update your operating system, visit our Update Your Operating System page.

Another important method of defense is a desktop firewall. Firewalls prevent unwanted network traffic from the outside world, such as someone trying to find a security vulnerability in your computer. For more information about firewalls and descriptions on installing and operating them on your computer, visit our Desktop Firewalls page.

You should also have current and effective antivirus software installed on your computer. NSIT licenses McAfee VirusScan for Windows and Mac OS X, and you can download the software for free from the Software Site Licensing website.
