NSIT Goes Green with New Building
The University and NSIT are contributing towards sustainability efforts on campus by going green with the renovation of an old building, now home to some NSIT staff.
NSIT is not only going green, but we're also going for the gold. The renovated building located at 6045 S. Kenwood earned LEED Gold certification. LEED, Leadership Excellence in Environmental Design, is a green building program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The Council provides third party review and certification of buildings' design, construction, and performance in the following five key areas of environmental and health concern:
- Energy efficiency
- Water efficiency
- Materials and resources use
- Sustainable site development
- Indoor air quality
The LEED program awards points to buildings for the green building criteria specified above. The renovation of 6045 S. Kenwood earned a total of 38 points for the gold.
Although 6045 S. Kenwood is the first building on campus to partake in the LEED program, Facilities Services is planning the same level of LEED certification for all new building projects and renovations. For more information about LEED certification, visit the LEED website.
