10 Services You Might Not Know About
Did you know that NSIT offers many services that can make life at the University of Chicago easier?
This list highlights some of the services that you might not know about. Some of them you'll want to start using right away, like your own Web-based file storage account that makes accessing documents from any computer a breeze, and some you hope you'll never have to use, like on-campus computer repair services. Once you've read about them, feel free to tell your friends. They're all useful and many of them are free of charge.
NSIT offers numerous other services as well. Check out the NSIT website and use our Find IT tool to learn more about the full array of technical services available to you as a member of the University of Chicago community.
- Get free online storage using WebShare
You can store files (documents, pictures, spreadsheets--anything) using Webshare. Because you can share your file space with others, even people without a CNetID, WebShare is a great way to send oversize files.
NOTE: If you are a faculty or staff member, please contact your local computing personnel before using WebShare for administrative information.
- Obtain discounted software
Don't pay more for software than you need to! The University licenses an array of software that you can use free of charge, such as McAfee VirusScan and software on USITE machines. In addition, software packages such as Microsoft Offi ce and Adobe Design Collection are available at discounted rates. Visit the on-campus Solution Center or the online O-Store for discounts on many items, and (usually) free shipping.
- Make phone calls for less
If you are in your dorm room, save your cell minutes and use the phone in your room. Local and domestic long-distance calls are only 3 cents per minute, and incoming calls are free. Speaking of cell phones, sign up for the AT&T cellular phone plan through the University to receive a 10% discount on monthly voice and data plans for students, 15% for faculty and staff. This discount continues as long as you hold a valid University of Chicago email address.
- Get identification, photos, and tickets
You can visit the ID and Privileges office in the lobby of the Regenstein library to get or replace your University ID card, get help with your CNetID, purchase CTA or Omega Airport Shuttle passes, obtain an international student ID or teacher ID card, have passport and naturalization photos taken, or rent a locker in the Regenstein library.
- Join the University network from anywhere
The Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides a channel through which you can access campus-based file shares and use your desktop remotely, no matter where you are in the world. However, keep in mind that you do not need the VPN to access library resources and most other campus resources.
- Watch television
cTV lets you watch a selection of television channels over the campus data network right on your computer in order to keep abreast of current events. To get cTV, you must be using a wired (not wireless) connection that is enabled with multicast technology, such as the one in your dorm room (most of the campus network now is multicast). The available channels - such as CNN and MSNBC - are a combination of local, satellite, and Internet channels.
- Recycle and save the environment
Don't throw your computer in the trash! Recycle it instead. Drop off your computer or other hardware at the Solution Center and do a good thing for the planet.
- Get your computer repaired
Sick computer? Get it repaired at the Solution Center or the warehouse (see web for times and locations). Apple, Dell, HP, IBM and Xerox technicians can repair both your computer and select printers. You can bring in your equipment without an appointment, or arrange for an on-site service call for HP LaserJet and Xerox Phaser printers.
NOTE: Depending on the services offered by your local technical support, please consult your local personnel before initiating repairs.
- Get help
To find services and help on the web, search the Find IT service directory on the NSIT website. If you have questions about your computer or NSIT services, you can call NSIT at 834-8324 (4-TECH on campus phones) Monday through Friday or email support@uchicago.edu to get help. Many units also have technical personnel who can be of assistance. For extra training, sign up for free classes.
- Protect yourself from the dark side
Hackers, stalkers, scammers, and other miscreants are using the Internet too. Prevent yourself from becoming a victim by reading and following the tips on the Safe Computing website. In addition, be sure to sign up for cAlert, which will notify you via phone, email, or text message in the event of a campus emergency or closing.
