Harper Login Service Ends December 22
University central computing has offered an interactive Unix service for over 20 years, most recently on harper.uchicago.edu. Among other things, harper and its predecessors was for a long while a primary resource for file storage and email access for faculty, students, and staff. In recent years, however, WebShare and xMail, email services from Google, Microsoft and others, and the free and open availability of Linux (not to mention the Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X) have reduced the role of harper on campus and the need for a campus-level shared Unix system. Usage has waned dramatically from its peak days, and dropped further when home.uchicago.edu was dissociated from harper. As a result, NSIT will decommission harper.uchicago.edu on December 22, 2009.
The bulk of harper.uchicago.edu traffic came from users editing their home.uchicago.edu pages; these pages have since been moved so this service will not be interrupted. Those using harper for email purposes can easily transfer their stored email to IMAP in cMail. Similarly, those using harper for file storage and transfer can utilize WebShare, which offers a larger quota and more extensive sharing capabilities.
For instructions on how to transfer email or file storage prior to December 22, please visit http://nsit.uchicago.edu/docs/harper.
