Services and Access to Them

Computer Operations provides mainframe services to administrative staff of the University of Chicago. Usually, a supervisor will request enrollment for a staff member through the Account Representative assigned to the department. Upon proper identification, a person-id and password are created for the staff member. With valid authorization by the Project Administrator, the staff member is also enrolled in one or more projects. For the convenience of staff, the Account Representative is also able to facilitate the creation of an e-mail address and ph-alias. These latter services are managed by Academic Computing Services.

The mainframe is optimized for administrative functions; and, is ordinarily not used for academic or research uses. There are a variety of other servers on campus designed for specific academic and research uses. They are partially described at the Computing Resources Page.

Some mainframe services require additional registration. For example, Financial Systems controls registration for the Financial Analysis System (FAS); Alumni Development controls registration for the Alumni Development Data System (ADDS).

Computer Operations manages a number of IBM and Sun administrative servers. Access to these servers is controlled by the departments responsible for the functions run on those machines.
