Peer-to-Peer traffic limits

Audience

Campus Network/Server Administrators.

Policy

The University of Chicago constrains peer-to-peer network traffic from our campus because of its widespread use in distributing illegal or copyrighted material.  We recognize those same distribution methods are highly efficient for legitimate and necessary material as well.  By request, we will exempt host machines on campus from such traffic limits if they are registered as requiring peer-to-peer protocols for the administration of the University or furtherance of its educational and research mission.  Such requests should be sent to noc@uchicago.edu and accompanied by the written approval of the head of IT for the Division or School. This exemption will not be made for students' computers.

NSIT reserves the right to remove the host in question from the network entirely if we find it distributing or collecting illegal or copyrighted material, or using excessive amounts of network bandwidth to the detriment of other hosts on the network.
