Network Time Protocol (NTP)
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize the time of a computer client or server to another server or reference time source, such as a radio or satellite receiver or modem. The existing NTP subnet consists of a multiply redundant hierarchy of servers and clients, with each level in the hierarchy identified by stratum number. Primary servers operate at stratum one and provide synchronization to secondary servers operating at stratum two and so on to higher strata.
There are three stratum two NTP servers on campus:
- ntp-0.uchicago.edu (128.135.4.2)
- ntp-1.uchicago.edu (128.135.72.200)
- ntp-2.uchicago.edu (128.135.228.2)
Further, each router maintained by NSIT also acts as a stratum 3 NTP server, broadcasting to 255.255.255.255.
