About Junkmail

Junkmail is NSIT's service for filtering spam and viruses for @uchicago.edu email accounts. Junkmail scans all incoming mail to @uchicago.edu addresses and quarantines identifiable viruses and spam. The Junkmail filter looks for certain message characteristics and quarantines all identifiable viruses and spam.

How Does Junkmail Identify Spam?

Junkmail works primarily by analyzing the originating addresses and cross-referencing those addresses with known spammer patterns and locations. Additionally, it compiles statistics related to the contents of the message as a whole and compares them to other known spam messages.

How Does Junkmail Identify Viruses?

Junkmail uses antivirus definitions much like the antivirus software you would install on your personal computer. Messages that are identified as viruses are blocked from delivery to the mail servers.
