Using LDAP in Webmail
LDAP is the technology behind the University of Chicago's CNet directory server. You can now search for, and add, a recipient's email address from within Webmail.
If you have never set up your Webmail account to access the CNet directory server, you will first need to add LDAP as a service.
- Log in to your Webmail account as you normally would at https://webmail.uchicago.edu
- Go to Address Book → Find People → Directory Services
- Click Add Service
- Fill in the following information:
Desciption: UChicago
LDAP Server: ldap.uchicago.edu
Search Root: dc=uchicago,dc=edu
Port Number: 389 - Click Done to close out of the Directory Services Properties page
- Click Done to close out of the general Directory Services page
Composing email to recipients from the LDAP directory
- Go to Address Book → Find People
- Make sure that "UChicago" is selected on the Find in pull down menu
- If it isn't, select it and click Select
Note: If you do not click Select, the search will not be done correctly! - Enter a recipient's name or email address
- Click Find Now
- Select the desired recipient by clicking in the To, Cc or Bcc checkbox and then click Compose
Importing entries from the LDAP directory
- Go to Address Book → Find People
- Make sure that "UChicago" is selected on the Find in pull down menu
- If it isn't, select it and click Select
- Enter a recipient's name or email address
- Click Find Now
- Select the desired recipient by clicking in the Import checkbox and then click Import
- Under "Import to Category," select the category that best describes the imported address and click Import
- The new contact has now been added to your address book. Select the desired recipient by clicking in the To, Cc or Bcc checkbox and then click Compose
