Documentation - Harper
Harper is being decommissioned on December 22nd, 2009
The number of people who use harper.uchicago.edu for anything other than home.uchicago.edu web pages has been steadily dropping for years. With the advent of Linux and Mac OS X, the need for a central command-line Unix service has mostly disappeared. Given these changes, the low number of dedicated harper users, and ongoing budget and resource constraints, we have reluctantly concluded that the harper service will be discontinued on December 22nd, 2009.
If you are still using harper for email, we recommend that you use pine to transfer any email you still have on harper (such as that in your "Harper pine folders" collection) up to the cMail server. Once it is on cMail, you can access it via webmail.uchicago.edu, or using any standard IMAP email client, such as Mozilla Thunderbird. Additionally, for the duration of October, we have enabled harper.uchicago.edu itself as an IMAP server; this would enable you to use Thunderbird to transfer your email directly down to a local machine.

If you are using harper for file storage, you may use an SFTP client (such as WinSCP or Fugu) to transfer all your files down to a local hard drive. Going forward, we recommend that you use WebShare for this purpose.
After harper is shut down, we will also package up all the files in your home directory and move them up into your WebShare file store, just in case you missed anything.
