Identity Finder Documentation for Windows

To Download Identity Finder Software point your browser to http://nsit.uchicago.edu/services/licensing/download/idfinder/.

To Search for Social Security Numbers Only:

1. Double click on the Identity Finder shortcut.

*No shortcut on your desktop? Go to Start → All programs → Identity Finder Folder → Identity Finder 

A. In the Identity Finder Welcome Window, select Continue in Wizard Mode.

B. Click Next.

2. In the Automatic Searching Using AnyFind Window:

A. Select only Social Security Numbers, by checking the box next to Social Security Numbers.

B. For AnyfindWorldwide Searching select No.

C. Click Next.

3. In the Unique Searching Using Your Personal Information Window:

A. Select No.

B. Click Next.

4. In the Where to Search Window:

A. Check the box next to All Files.

B. Check the box next to Emails and Attachments.

C. In the File Location Section, select My Documents and Settings.

*To search for SSNs located in a different folder, select Custom Location, click on the Dash box and Browse to the appropriate folder.

D. Click Next.

5. In the Finalization Window:

A. Click Finish.

*You may be asked to enter user ids and passwords so that Identity Finder can search some areas.

6. When the search is finished (this can take a long time) review the Summary Window.

A. No SSNs? You are finished, close the application.

B. If there are SSNs found, select Advanced.

C. Click OK.

7. The Identity Finder Application Window will appear.

A. Review files listed under Location by clicking on the item. The item will appear to the right. If you double click the file will open.

B. If the number is, in fact, a SSN, NSIT strongly recommends that you delete the file, or edit the file to remove the sensitive numbers.

C. If you need files with SSNs on your computer, please contact your local IT support (or the NSIT Support Line) as soon as possible to discuss other options to remediate the problem.

To Schedule a Search:

Note: If you set Identity Finder to search for bank account numbers, it may misidentify FAS ledger numbers as bank account numbers.

1. Double click on the Identity Finder shortcut.

*No shortcut on your desktop? Go to Start → All programs → Identity Finder Folder → Identity Finder

A. In the Identity Finder Welcome Window, select Skip Wizard and use Advanced Mode.

B. Click Finish.

2. Click on the Tools and Options Tab.

A. In the Advanced Options Group, click on Scheduling.

3. The Identity Finder Settings Window will open in the Scheduling Tab.

A. Under the Scheduling Identity Finder to run automatically, select Schedule Identity Finder using your configurations.

B. To schedule a regular time, click Configure.

4. A Task Schedule window will appear. You can choose to schedule Identity Finder to search your computer for SSNs on a regular basis.

A. Schedule the task, choose a start time by using the drop down menus.

B. When you are satisfied with your choices click OK.

5. To set up the search, to just look for SSN, chose the following settings:

A. Under General Settings, check both boxes.

B. Under What to Search For: Select Social Security Numbers.

C. Under Where to Search: Select Files and Compressed Files.

D. For File locations: Select My Documents and Settings.

E. Under File Search Settings, select Search only common files.

F. Under Email Search Settings, do not select anything.

G. Under Results, do not select anything.

H. Under Logging, select Enable Logging. Identity Finder will save the files in a default location.

I. For Log Format, select Tab separated.

J. For Log Creation, select Append to previous log.

K. For Log Information, select Matching Items. For the Home Version, select Locations Containing Matches.

L. For Log Security, do not select anything.

M. Click OK.

 

6. In the Scheduled Task Account Setting Window,

A. Enter and the Username and Password you are logged in as.

B. Click OK.
