Alternating Between Network Connections

Many computers provide multiple methods for connecting to networks; at the University of Chicago, there are also many ways to access the network, meaning a single laptop might connect using dialup from off campus, wired ethernet in an office, and wireless ethernet in the library. Generally speaking, most computer operating systems can handle these transitions smoothly, but if they do not it might be necessary to explicitly enable or disable a network connection.

Please note that we generally do not recommend alternating between connections unless you are having network problems.

Alternating Between Connections

Windows XP
  • Go to Start → All Programs → Accessories → Communications → Network Connections.
  • Right-click the connection you do not want to use and select "Disable"
  • If it is not currently enabled (it will be grayed out if it isn't) Right-click the connection you want to use and select "Enable"
Mac OS X
  • Go to Apple menu → System Preferences.
  • Under Internet & Network section, select "Network".
  • From the Show pull down menu, select "Network Port Configurations".
  • Check the boxes under On to enable or disable a connection
  • Click "Apply Now" to apply your changes.
