Manual Dialup Settings for UC Modem Pool

Problem:

I'd like to setup a dial-up connection to the University of Chicago modem pool. What do I fill in for all the fields?

Solution:

The modem pool service is a legacy service, using somewhat obsolete technology; NSIT recommends that off campus users use a high speed ISP service, which provides much better connection speeds and better reliability.

If you wish to use the modem pool service, this page will provide the basic information you will need to make a connection. NSIT does not support manually configured connections; it will be up to you to properly configure the PPP and TCP/IP settings with this information to get the connection to work.

PPP Settings:

  • Dialup number: 773 926 1600
  • Modem Speed/Protocols: up to 56K bps, V.92 and earlier protocols
  • Communication Protocol: PPP
  • Authentication Protocol: PAP (standard). No connection script needed.
  • Username: your CNetID
  • Password: your CNet password

TCP/IP Settings:

  • IP Address: Obtain from PPP server
  • Subnet Mask: Obtain from PPP server
  • Router Address: Obtain from PPP server
  • Name Server Addresses: Obtain automatically from PPP server.

In many cases, configuration will be as simple as creating a new connection using the correct phone number and username.
