Mac VPN Connection Guide
Please note the first time you use the VPN, you must have administrative rights on your Mac or you will not be able to download and install the software. Also, we recommend that you have the latest version of Java on your computer before installing the VPN. You can find out if you have the latest version and download a new version at www.java.com.
Before using the VPN for the first time
We recommend you uninstall any old versions of the campus VPN before installing the new version. To uninstall the old version, follow the steps below:
- Open a terminal window (Applications → Utilities → Terminal).
- Run the following command: sudo /usr/local/bin/vpn_uninstall
- Enter your Mac OS X password.
- Answer "Yes" when are prompted to remove each item.
- Restart your machine.
Once you've restarted your computer, resume the installation by following the steps below.
Using the VPN for the first time
- Point your browser to http://cvpn.uchicago.edu.
- Log in with your CNetID and Password.
- The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client should install on your computer. Note: A warning window may appear, if so select Allow. Additionally, a window may appear that requires you to enter your Mac admin password; this is NOT the same as your CNet password - this password is unique to your Mac.
- When
the install is complete you will see the Cisco AnyConnect icon
in your dock. - To see details of the VPN connection, click the Cisco AnyConnect icon.
- To disconnect from the VPN, click the Cisco AnyConnect icon and select Disconnect in the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client Window.
Subsequent times that you use the VPN:
- Point your browser to cvpn.uchicago.edu.
- Login with your CNetID and Password.
- The Cisco AnyConnect Icon will display in the dock when connected.
Occasionally Cisco AnyConnect VPN software will need to be updated. NSIT will push these updates to your computer when you log into the VPN at cvpn.uchicago.edu. These updates will require admin privileges to install.
