AppleTalk Retirement: TCP/IP File Sharing in Mac OS X

To make sure you connect to your file servers after AppleTalk is retired from University routers, you can use TCP/IP based Apple Filing Protocol (AFP). The following instructions delineate the steps necessary to make an AFP connection.

  1. You can connect to an AFP server using Mac OS X's built-in networking capabilities. Go to the Go Menu → Connect to Server. This should open up the "Connect to Server" window.

    Chooser

  2. To connect to a file server using AFP over TCP/IP, click on the button that says "Server IP Address..."
  3. In the "Server Address" field, put "afp://" and either the hostname or the IP address of the computer you want to connect to. Then click on the connect button.

    Chooser

  4. You'll be prompted for your username and password for the AFP Server.
