AppleTalk Retirement: TCP/IP File Sharing in Mac OS X
To make sure you connect to your file servers after AppleTalk is retired from University routers, you can use TCP/IP based Apple Filing Protocol (AFP). The following instructions delineate the steps necessary to make an AFP connection.
- You can connect to an AFP server using Mac OS X's built-in networking capabilities. Go to the Go Menu → Connect to Server. This should open up the "Connect to Server" window.

- To connect to a file server using AFP over TCP/IP, click on the button that says "Server IP Address..."
- In the "Server Address" field, put "afp://" and either the hostname or the IP address of the computer you want to connect to. Then click on the connect button.

- You'll be prompted for your username and password for the AFP Server.
