Selecting a Mobile Device for Email Communications

Need to check email anytime, anywhere? Of course you can use the University's web-based email services (cMail is available at https://webmail.uchicago.edu and xMail is available at https://xmail.uchicago.edu), but you might consider using a mobile device that will allow you to check your email wherever you are.

You have several options, including BlackBerry devices, Treos, or Windows Mobile devices. The mobile device you choose is a matter of taste, as well as functionality. A BlackBerry device is generally simpler, while a Windows Mobile device has more functions and complexity. For the most part, BlackBerry devices have longer battery life.

Keep in mind that mobile devices are evolving rapidly, and each new device adds more features. The technology is also changing to make these devices more alike. For the purpose of this tip sheet, we'll consider the newest models.

  1. BackBerry Devices
If you want email and calendar on your device, you should choose a BlackBerry. Use of a BlackBerry requires three components, each with their respective charges:
    1. A BlackBerry device
    2. A cellular voice plan and unlimited data plan
    3. xMail
  2. Other Mobile Devices
For a device that's more like a mobile computer, a Treo or a Windows Mobile device might be more appropriate. Both of these options are compatible with either xMail or cMail. Use of one of these mobile devices requires three components, each with their respective charges:
    1. A mobile device
    2. A cellular voice plan and unlimited data plan
    3. cMail, xMail, or another email service
  3. Both BlackBerry devices and other mobile devices, such as Treos, now offer instantaneous updates. However, on a Treo, the technology used may deplete your battery.

NOTE: If you use a small device with any frequency, you should select an unlimited data plan.
