Software at the University: Where to Find it and How to Get it

The University of Chicago offers a wealth of software. For example, members of the University of Chicago community can get campus licensed software through the Connectivity Package or the Site Licensing Office. The University is an authorized campus reseller that sells software to the University of Chicago community. In addition, you can also visit one of the USITE computer clusters, which have a standard suite of software installed on each machine. We discuss each of these in more detail below.

Connectivity Software

NSIT distributes installers for email, web, and chat clients (among others), configured for use in the University environment. You can download these packages at no charge by visiting http://connectivity.uchicago.edu.

Site Licensed Software

A site license is a way to gain a bulk discount when purchasing many copies of a given piece of software. Through the University of Chicago’s Site Licensing office, a variety of software is available to University community members at a discounted rate – and sometimes at no charge! To see a list of the software available to students, faculty and staff, visit http://licensing.uchicago.edu.

Buying Software Through the University

NSIT offers several ways students, faculty and staff can purchase software (and hardware) at educational rates. You can visit the NSIT Solution Center on the third floor of the University bookstore for help with purchasing software. Soon you’ll be able to purchase software online from the O-Store; you can already browse available software at http://ostore.uchicago.edu. To learn more about purchasing discounted software and hardware from the University, visit http://nsit.uchicago.edu/sales.

USITE

NSIT operates computers throughout campus. These computers are available throughout the year to those with a valid CNetID and password. USITE computers provide a standard suite of software, along with printers and scanners. Learn more at http://nsit.uchicago.edu/usite.
