Website Development and Hosting

Related Tip Sheet: Server Hosting

NSIT offers a range of services related to website development and hosting. This tip sheet provides a brief overview of available services and links to more information.

Web Design and Creation for Departments

Web Services provides professional standards-compliant development, support, consultation and hosting of sites and applications that serve the broad needs of the University community. This includes related services such as business process analysis and consultation, user interface/graphic design, web application design and programming, functionality testing, and risk analysis and security review, in addition to long-term on-going support for websites and applications. For more information, visit the Web Design & Creation for Departments site.

Web Express

Once a site is designed, groups may take control of the content on their sites using Web Express, a webpage update tool provided by NSIT Web Services. This tool allows content editors at all levels of expertise to maintain website content via an online interface that is similar to word processing software. For more information, visit the Web Express site.

Websites for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs)

NSIT offers website space to RSOs for static web content. Sites must be approved by ORCSA before NSIT will grant them. To request an RSO website, send an email to orcsa-help@lists.uchicago.edu. Your email should include the CNetIDs of the people who will be maintaining the site (so they can be given access) and the URL that you would like for your site. Websites can have short URLs:"rsoname.uchicago.edu" and are limited to reasonable space usage.

Chalk for Course Websites

NSIT offers Chalk, a learning management tool, provides a common easy-to-use framework for faculty to develop and disseminate course materials to students. To request a Chalk course site, go to the Chalk home page at http://chalk.uchicago.edu and click on the link marked "Request a Site." For more information, as well as getting started guides and tutorials, visit the Chalk site.

Chalk for Committees and Groups

Chalk can also be used by committees and groups for non-course related collaboration, communication, and limited file sharing. To submit a request for a Chalk site for a committee or group, go to the Chalk home page at http://chalk.uchicago.edu and click on the link marked "Organization Request."

Web Hosting

For departments wishing to construct their own websites, Web Administration provides Web hosting environments for both static and dynamic University websites. Each environment has a robust feature set and current software suite. For more information, as well as answers to frequently asked questions about managing your website, visit the Web Hosting site.
