Set Up a Computer in ad.uchicago.edu

Only members of the UCAD Workstation Additions group can add a machine to ad.uchicago.edu. In order to set up a computer in ad.uchicago.edu, you need to:

  • Modify network settings
  • Join the machine to ad.chicago.edu

Modify Network Settings

  1. In the Control Panel, open Network Settings and right-click the primary NIC for the machine. Select Properties to open the Local Area Network Properties dialog box.
  2. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the Properties button.
  3. Select the following settings in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box:
    • Enter the IP Address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway for the machine.
    • Enter the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server for your network.

  4. Click the Advanced button.
  5. Select the following settings in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box:
    • Select the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)" checkbox and enter the appropriate information for your network. For example, if your machine's host record is in the domain library.uchicago.edu, you'll want to add in the suffixes in the following order: Ad.uchicago.edu, ad.local, uchicago.edu, library.uchicago.edu.
    • Enter the DNS suffix for your network in the "DNS suffix for this connection" field. For example, if the machines host record is in library.uchicago.edu, then you should enter "library.uchicago.edu".
    • DO NOT select the "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" or "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration" checkboxes. Dynamic updates are not allowed to the campus BIND servers.

  6. Click the WINS tab at the top of the dialog box.
  7. Select the settings to match the image below.

  8. Click the OK button.

Join the Machine to ad.uchicago.edu

  1. In the Control Panel, double-click System to open the System Properties dialog box. Select the Computer Name tab.
  2. Click the Change... button.
  3. Verify that the "Computer name" matches the name of the machine you are joining to the domain.

  4. Click the More button.
  5. Select the following settings in the DNS Suffix and NetBIOS Computer Name dialog box:
    • Enter the DNS suffix for your machine in the "Primary DNS suffix of this computer" field.
    • Deselect the "Change primary DNS suffix when domain member changes" checkbox.

  6. Click the OK button.
  7. Select the "Domain" radio button and enter ad.uchicago.edu in the field.

  8. Click the OK button.
  9. Enter your OU admin account username and password to join this machine to the network. Click the OK button.
  10. If the credentials are correct, a window will display a Welcome to the ad.uchicago.edu domain message. Click the OK button.
  11. A window will display a message notifying you that your must restart this computer for the changes to take effect. Click the OK button.
  12. Close the windows and reboot the machine.
