Support News

NSIT email service offerings are changing...

Starting May 1, 2010, new students will be required to provide a forwarding email address of their choice, to which their @uchicago.edu email will be forwarded. New students will continue to receive an @uchicago.edu email address, but they will not be given the option to use cMail.

Over the next 18 months, current students will be asked to begin forwarding their email to another email provider of their choice. By July of 2011, all student email will be forwarded and student use of cMail will be discontinued.

We welcome student input on this transition and encourage you to contact us at email-feedback@lists.uchicago.edu. Please see the comprehensive FAQ on this matter here.

On Windows 7

NSIT Support does not yet offer full support for Windows 7, the newly-released Microsoft operating system. Presently:

  • cVPN is compatible with Windows 7.
  • Our antivirus offerings page has been updated with information about Windows 7.
  • We can answer basic questions regarding its use and features.
  • Purchasing questions should be directed to the NSIT Solution Center. Student media and departmental media are not yet available.

cVPN: a newer, friendlier VPN

NSIT has officially begun the release of its new campus VPN solution: cVPN. There are two major differences between this new service and the old campus VPN:

  • cVPN is a web-based VPN, meaning that it installs itself via your browser when you visit it. You do not need to visit any other websites to download something. There's no longer any need to import certificates or tweak settings.
  • cVPN uses a different protocol to connect to campus than the old campus VPN. This protocol is compatible with 64 bit OSes, such as Windows Vista and the upcoming Windows 7 operating system.

With the release of cVPN, use of the old campus VPN is no longer recommended. While the old campus VPN will eventually be decommissioned, we will continue to operate the old campus VPN to allow individuals time to switch to cVPN without an interruption in service.

Correspondingly, we have updated our VPN documentation.
