Periodic Maintenance of Applications

Both static sites and (more commonly) applications coded by our department use technologies, platforms and standards that are subject to change.

Several examples are:

  • The web server upon which your websites run is upgraded to a level that requires a partial recoding of your site (every 4-5 years)
  • A security vulnerability requires your website to be partially recoded so that it cannot be hacked (rare, since a security review is a part of every application launch)
  • The language or version of the language in which your site is written is no longer supported by NSIT (every 4-5 years)
  • The standards by which modern websites are coded changes, necessitating a partial recoding. This makes websites more extensible, flexible, and future-proof. Stripping out old code creates much simpler HTML pages, which are leaner, easier to update, more search engine friendly, and more accessible to a broader range of users. (1-2 years)

These changes and upgrades are normal and expected, given the evolving nature of web technology. You should assume that all website and applications will require a certain degree of maintenance and care over its lifetime, similar to the maintenance of a car. When technology changes/upgrades occur, and the recoding work needs to happen, Web Services will contact you in advance to explain the nature and need for the change and to provide estimates for planning purposes.
