GNetID Administration Policy

Introduction

The Guest Network Identification (GNetID) is a username/password combination in the form of g-Nxxxxx where N is a number [0-9] and xxxxx is a variable-length string of alpha-numeric characters. This identifier is only able to be used to authenticate to the wireless network at The University of Chicago. GNetIDs are meant to be used in situations where an individual is visiting the University and only needs access to the wireless network.

Requesting Access to Create GNetIDs

Any unit who can present a valid business case for wanting to grant GNetIDs to visitors of that unit shall submit the following to gnet@uchicago.edu:

1. Business Unit/School/Division
2. Primary Contact's Name
3. Primary Contact's CNetID
4. Business case

The Primary Contact shall be the liaison between NSIT and the Business Unit, and will be personally responsible for:

* Granting access by their designates to the GNet Administration program (GNet Administrators).
* Revoking access to the GNet Administration program when one of their GNet Administrators leaves the Business Unit.
* Ensuring that GNet Administrators are following GNet Policies outlined in this document.
* Ensuring that the Primary Contact's cnetid@uchicago.edu email address routes to a place where the contact regularly checks mail so as to receive communications from NSIT.

NSIT will evaluate the application, work with the Business Unit if necessary to tune the application as appropriate, and present a recommendation to the CIO who will either approve or deny the application.

GNet Creation by GNet Administrators

GNet Administrators shall be delegated and managed by the Primary Contact in the Business Unit. The Primary Contact shall be responsible for training the GNet Administrators, enabling them to create GNetIDs, and revoking access when the administrator leaves the Business Unit. GNet Administrators shall use the GNet Administration interface provided by NSIT to manage GNetIDs. They shall be responsible for:

1. Creating GNetIDS
2. Providing support to GNetID holders
3. Changing GNetID passwords

Creation

Under no circumstances will GNet Administrators issue GNetIDs to people who do not meet the criteria of the business case that was submitted to NSIT. To do so will result in a loss of GNet Administrator privileges.

When creating a GNetID, Administrators are required to fill out the creation form in its entirety and submitting only true and accurate data. If the Administrator doesn't have enough information to completely fill out the form then they must not request a GNetID for that individual until the individual provides all the required information. The Business Unit shall maintain contact information for any user requesting a GNetID including Name, Address, Phone, and email for a period of not less than six months from the end of the user's stay, and provide access to the records to NSIT Network Security upon request.

Upon arrival at the university and before receiving the GNet Username/Password the GNetID User will be required to agree to the Terms and Conditions for Use of GNetIDs. A record of this agreement will be kept for not less than six months from the end of the user's stay. This record will be made available to NSIT Network Security upon request.
