iPhone Support
- General iPhone support: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/phone/
- All technical support for the iPhone is handled by Apple directly.
- If you purchased AppleCare, please call the AppleCare dedicated iPhone team: 800-800-2775 opt 3
- Otherwise please call Apple Technical Support at 800-694-7466
- Apple has three warranty or repair options: the first and most common is an active exchange in which they will send a replacement device and place a hold on your credit card for the value of the replacement device until your original is returned. This is best because it requires only a few minutes downtime as you swap the SIM card and resynchronizes with iTunes, but the credit hold is of concern to some. Second, you can ask Apple to send a prepaid box to return your device in, or, third, you can take the device to an Apple Store Genius Bar for repair. These require several days' downtime while awaiting receipt of the new phone but incur no immediate cost.
UChicago WiFi
To our WiFi network, the iPhone appears like any other computing device. You must authenticate through the same steps. However, the iPhone, in an effort to conserve battery power, will regularly attempt to close network connections. During periods of even relatively short inactivity your iPhone may disconnect from the WiFi network. When this occurs, you will need to periodically reconnect by opening a Safari page, reloading a page and re-authenticating to the wireless network. Additionally, as you roam across campus and pass from one area to another, the Access Point your iPhone is connected to may change; this may require re-authentication. See http://wireless.uchicago.edu for more information.
UChicago VPN
The current University of Chicago VPN configuration does not support the iPhone.
Setting up your Mail
Using xMail
Configuration is fairly straightforward, assuming you have the software update 2.0 installed. This is a free upgrade for iPhones and $9.95 for iPod Touch. When your devices are connected to your computer, iTunes will present the relevant upgrade options.
- Tap Settings → Mail, Contacts, Calendars → Add Account → Microsoft Exchange
- Configure settings
- Email, enter: yourcnetid@uchicago.edu
- Domain, enter: adlocal
- Username, enter: yourcnetid
(Please note that earlier versions of the Apple iPhone software did not provide and entry for a Domain and you would consequently enter, adlocal\yourcnetid in the Username field, something which was discontinued with version 2.1 of the Apple iPhone software. If you don't see the Domain request field, please update your iPhone's OS.- Password, enter: your CNetID password
- Description, enter: something descriptive like xMail to help you differentiate this from other email accounts you may create (i.e. google, yahoo, or other).
- If successful, the iPhone will automatically obtain the server name, xmail.uchicago.edu. However, if the auto configuration failed you will be prompted to enter the Server. Enter: xmail.uchicago.edu. Tap Next in upper right corner. It will then verify the configuration. You may be required to re-enter your password.
- You will now be prompted to "Select info to synchronize using Exchange." The default is to synchronize your Mail, Contacts, and Calendars. We suggest these all be set to "on," so that each of these synchronizes wirelessly with Exchange.
- Tap Save
- Your account will configure synchronization. This will take moment or two. You will be sent to the main Accounts screen, where you can stop or proceed with options as noted below.
- Optional things you can set
- Signature: from the Home screen, tap Settings → Mail, Contacts, Calendars → Signature and type what you would like to appear as a email signature when sending mail from this device. Please note that this signature is the same across all accounts set up on the device.
- Time Zone Support: From the same screen as Signature, tap Time Zone Support. This is set to "OFF" and Cupertino, California by default. Some clients may prefer to force a specific time zone when traveling. You can change this to "ON" and "Chicago," if this is your preference.
