Technical Tools for IT Staff

Security Certificates

NSIT provides two types of certificates for secure communication on the Internet. These two types of certificates fulfill different needs.

Campus Certificates

The Network Security Center provides certificates for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and other purposes. These certificates are available free of charge, but may require user configuration. For a browser to accept these certificates, the certificate must be imported into the browser by the user, or accept a warning message each time the user accesses a page, which may not be desired for a large or non-technical audience. To learn more, see our Campus Certificate Authority page.

Worldwide Certificates

Web Systems Administration purchases Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates on behalf of the University. These certificates are recognized by all modern web browsers, worldwide. There is a charge for these certificates. These certificates are recommended if the website is aimed at a large groups of users, non-technical users, or users who have no technical support. This is because these certificates are recognized by all browsers. To learn more, see our Worldwide SSL Secure Certificates page.
