Chalk Learning Management System
Student FAQ
I am registered for a course, but it is not appearing in the My Courses Module when I login to Chalk after I login to Chalk?
Not all instructors use Chalk in their teaching efforts. Please check with your instructor to determine if they are using Chalk.
I dropped a class, but it's still showing up in my Chalk course list.
You won't be considered officially withdrawn from the Chalk course site until the Registrar has processed the drop. It may take 24-36 hours for this information to be received from the Registrar to Chalk.
How do I send a file via the Drop Box?
From within the course site, click the "Student Drop Box" link on the left side of the page, then click the "Send File" button. Next, enter the title of the file* and click "Browse" to find it on your computer. Click "Submit" at the bottom of the page to send the file to the instructor.
*When naming files to be sent via the Drop Box, it's best to include your name or initials to maintain a unique filename. Don't use non-alphanumeric characters (%#&@), as this can cause the file to display improperly for some users. Mac Users: be sure to add the three-letter extension (.doc, .pdf, .mp3) to your filenames before uploading them.
I sent my file via the Drop Box, but the instructor didn't receive it?
Students can save files to their Drop Box, until they are ready to submit it for grading. Many times, students mistakenly save the file, instead of sending it. To check, students should go to their Drop Box and look at the file in question.
- If directly below the file, it states "Posted On" and a date, then this file has just been saved and not sent to the instructor. Students should click on Send File, find the file under Select File, then Submit.
- If directly below the file, it states "Submitted" and the date, then the file has been submitted to the instructor.
I'm a TA for a course that uses Chalk. How do I get TA-level access to the site?
The instructor of the course can grant you access to the site as a TA, so you will need to contact him or her about this.
Why do I still see courses from previous quarters?
Our policy is to keep course sites on Chalk in the system forever. Students can hide the courses from view in the My Courses Module. To customize the My Courses Module, click on the pencil icon which is located at the top of that module.
I forgot my password, what can I do?
Your Chalk password is your University of Chicago CNet Password. If you have forgotten your CNet Password, you may change it. Please visit the CNet Page for more information.
If I am thinking of taking a course, can I review the Syllabus?
If the instructor has granted Guest access to the selected course material, students can gain access by:
- Login to Chalk
- Click on the Chalk Tab
- Click on Chalk Course Catalog
- Search for the course (either by category or advanced search by instructor or course name)
- Once the course is located, click on Preview
If you are not able to Preview the course, the instructor has not granted Guest Access. You'll need to contact the instructor directly.
I am having trouble with an online test in my Chalk course?
Students should visit our Online Testing Issues page before taking an online test.
I am unable to open documents posted on Chalk?
If you are able, please check how the file is named. File names that include special characters, spaces, dashes, commas, etc., will not open for students. Periods should only be used directly before the file extension. The file extension tells the computer what program to use to open the file, such as .doc or .pdf.
Incorrect File Name: Readings, pg.1-2 (para. 3).pdf
Correct File Name: readingspgs1thru2.pdf
If the file name is incorrect, you'll need to contact your instructor. The instructor will have to name the document properly and repost it to Chalk.
How do I report an error I encountered in Chalk?
To report an error, copy the error text into an email message and send it to chalk@uchicago.edu. Let us know what web page you were on when the error occurred, and what you were attempting when it happened (e.g. trying to upload your syllabus). Information on whether you use a Mac or PC and what browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) is also useful.
When I click on Library Course Reserves menu link, I receive the error that additional permission are required.
Please try to completely close down your browser and re-login to Chalk. This usually resolves the issue.
