Connectivity Package

The Connectivity Package is a customized collection of software designed to help you connect to the University network and use networked tools securely from your office or home computer. NSIT has developed the Connectivity Package to make data networking convenient and trouble-free for even novice users. Once installed, the Connectivity Package will automatically keep its programs updated and configured correctly.

It includes clients for email (Thunderbird, recommended and configured for cMail, our basic email service); file transfer (SFTP) and secure shell (SSH), necessary for uploading personal web pages to our personal web page server; and web browsing (Firefox). It will also configure your machine for an Ethernet or dial-up connection to the University network, if necessary. Additionally, the Connectivity Package includes antivirus software, Adobe Reader, QuickTime Player, and Virtual Private Network (VPN) client software, though not all of these are installed by default.

The Connectivity Package is installed on all NSIT-supported desktop computers across campus and can also be installed on desktop computers that are supported by other University IT staff. NSIT also recommends the Connectivity Package to those users who want network access but must configure and maintain their own machines. All software and installers are thoroughly tested on these recommended platforms: Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista, Mac OS X 10.3, and Mac OS X 10.4.

The Connectivity Package is available at no charge from the NSIT Solution Center and the Identification & Privileges Office. It can also be downloaded from the Connectivity web page at http://connectivity.uchicago.edu, which includes full and up-to-date documentation and troubleshooting for applications in the package.
