cMail

cMail is the University's primary email service, offered free of charge to all current faculty, staff and students in the format of CNetID@uchicago.edu. NSIT supports several methods for accessing email:

  • Webmail is a multi-featured web-based interface to the cMail system. It is compatible with almost all recent web browsers.
  • Thunderbird is provided in the NSIT Connectivity Package and is the recommended desktop email client.

Staff and faculty also have the option of subscribing to the xMail fee-based service. You should check with your department to see whether they use xMail.

cMail Features

Both Webmail and Thunderbird contain a set of standard features, including the ability to create folders and filters, search for messages, maintain an address book, create signatures, and use the built-in spell checker. Additional features available in Webmail and Thunderbird are listed below.

Webmail

  • Accessible from any computer with a web browser without requiring you to download or install software
  • Add UChicago email addresses to a message using the Address Book
  • Personal Calendar with notification capability

Thunderbird

  • Software included in Connectivity Package, already configured to work with the University network
  • Add UChicago email addresses to a message using the auto-complete function
  • Manage multiple accounts
  • Download messages to view offline
  • Receive RSS feeds directly in your email
  • Receive desktop notifications of new messages
  • Customize software using add-ons and extensions
  • Additional security features, including S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, support for certificates and security devices

You can access Webmail at https://webmail.uchicago.edu.

Getting Thunderbird

Thunderbird is included in the Connectivity Package. To begin, download and install the Connectivity Package.
