Network Connectivity From Off Campus

Accessing Campus Resources from Off-Campus (VPN)

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) lets you, as a University community member, securely access University network resources as if you were on campus, no matter where you are in the world. However, you do not need the VPN to access library resources and most other campus resources. It is only necessary to access certain restricted resources, such as non-web-based file shares. If you are unsure about whether or not you need to use the VPN, check with local support or call 4-TECH before installing the VPN software.

The VPN is not recommended as a substitute for the web proxy, since it requires the installation of fairly complex and invasive software.

To log onto the VPN, just point your browser to http://cvpn.uchicago.edu. The first time you connect, the VPN will install some software; you will need administrative privileges on your machine to complete this process. Visit our VPN documentation page for detailed instructions and additional information. You can also browse the NSIT tip sheet on using the VPN to connect to the University network.
