Term

Definition

Authentication
The presentation and verification of identity
Authorization
The approval to use a set of services
Claiming
“Claiming” or “claims” refers to the process of establishing account services, generally by going to the CNet website and following the instructions for account claims: http://cnet.uchicago.edu.
Data Feed
transmitted electronic data
Directory Entry/Listing
Online campus directory entry, which includes work-related information such as name, department, email address, and phone.
LDAP
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol – provides authentication to services. May contain some authorization information.
Mail Forwarding
The ability to send your @uchicago.edu email to a different email address. Mailforwarding is available through the Online Directory, which can be accessed from the CNet site (http://cnet.uchicago.edu).
Modem Pool
Dial-up access to the University’s network using the 56k modem pool.
NSIT Email Account
An email account on the NSIT server system (aka, “harper” or “midway” account). Currently, email accounts include full Unix shell access. In the future, NSIT email accounts may be accessible through desktop email clients (such as Eudora) or web-based email clients (such as Webmail) only and may not include shell access.
PGP Key
One of the two keys you create with cryptography software such as PGP (Pretty Good Protection) . One key is needed to encrypt (the TAG's public key) and another key is needed to decrypt (the TAG's private key). Anyone, for e.g. the TAG system, who wants to send you private email encrypts the message or file with your public key. Once that message is encrypted, only you -- the owner of the corresponding private key -- can decipher the message using that private key.
Pre-create
A function of the TAG program that allows Trusted Agents to establish the CNetID and password for the TAG recipient.
Pre-Feed
A type of TAG account granted to an individual who is not yet present in an authoritative data feed (i.e. HR, Provost) but who is expected to be in a later feed.
Pre-identify
A function of the TAG program that allows Trusted Agents to determine what the CNetID will be before the TAG recipient claims his or her account. The TAG recipient must still claim the CNetID and password from the CNet website.
Proxy Server
An authentication system which allows users trying to access domain-restricted websites from systems outside the University to prove their affiliation through LDAP authentication.
Requestor
The Requestor is the person who recognizes the need for TAG services and requests that they be extended to a particular person. Requestors do not authorize TAG services—that authority rests upon the Trusted Agent as a representative of the Dean/Head of Department.
Special Feed
Datafeeds which do not come from regular University sources (the Provost’s Office and Human Resources Management).
TAG
Trusted Agent
TAG Account
Temporary account offered to individuals
TAG Recipient
An individual receiving services via a Trusted Agent
Unix Shell
The interactive Unix command interpreter. The shell program interprets your typed commands and then tells the Unix server's (for e.g. harper) operating system kernel what to do.
VPN
Virtual Private Network is a mechanism designed to make secure (encrypted) site-to-site and remote access connections over public networks.
