Rates Changes

On July 1, 2009 NSIT restructured voice and data rates for University departments outside of Chicago BioMedicine. For more information, read our Voice and Data Rates announcement.

Faculty and Staff

Ordering a phone for a new office? Thinking of upgrading your existing phone? Call Integrated Client Services & Support group at extension 2-9100, option 4. An Analyst will be glad to assist you. Here are a few definitions that we use in discussing telephone equipment with you:

Single-Line Telephone: A basic phone with a single line. This line can also be used for other purposes, including a fax or modem. Cost is independent of whether an NSIT device is used..

Multi-Line Telephone: A digital phone that includes the capability for two to four lines. This type of phone has dedicated buttons for features such as Hold, Transfer, Call Forward, Voicemail, etc..

Multi-Line Plus Telephone: A digital phone that includes the capability for five or more lines. This type of phone has dedicated buttons for features such as Hold, Transfer, Call Forward, Voicemail, etc..

IP Telephone: NSIT is running a pilot project to test the use of internet telephony, commonly called VoIP, at the University of Chicago. The first phase of the pilot involves NSIT staff and is in progress. VoIP transmits the voice conversation over the data network by using a special phone or device. To learn more, visit What is VoIP?

NSIT Cellular Services: NSIT also offers cellular phones and services to departments, faculty, and staff at the University. AT&T is the service provider. More information is available at the Cellular Service page.

Students

Each student residence hall room comes equipped with a telephone which offers campus, local, and domestic long distance calling at no cost. Each phone has its own number that can be directly dialed from any phone either on or off campus. Anyone wishing to reach students can either dial the number directly, or call the residence hall front desk and ask to be connected to any room.

Call waiting, abbreviated dialing, call forwarding, three-way calling, and redial features are included with the University phone service at no cost to students. Voicemail and Remote Call Forwarding are available upon request via web-form and Caller ID Block is available by request through the Office of Undergraduate Student Housing, at housesystem@uchicago.edu.

Students who wish to bring their own telephones or answering devices should check with the Office of Undergraduate Housing. Some halls support these standard analog devices but others are being fitted with IP-based devices where no personal equipment will work.

Making international calls requires an Authcode (authorization code) or a calling card. For more information, visit the Authcode page.

Installation/Changes/Cancellations

New installation, renovation or reconstruction projects are treated differently. Requests for data network connections are coordinated between project managers and contractors.

NSIT Cellular Services

NSIT also offers cellular phones and services to departments, faculty, staff, and students at the University. More information is available at the Cellular service page.
