Sharing Files with WebShare
One of WebShare’s most powerful features is that it allows you to share files—even very large files—with others. Files can consist of anything electronic, including words, pictures, and multimedia. Just be sure you are the legal owner of the material so that you don’t violate copyright law.
How to Share Files
WebShare lets you share your uploaded files in two ways. If the person with whom you wish to share a file has a CNetID, you can give them access by clicking the share button for that file and adding that person as a user. If you wish to share a file with someone without a CNetID, you can create a link to the file called a "ticket" that you can send to whomever you wish. If you have an email client set up on your computer, you can use the "Email Link" button to send the ticket using your client. If you're using web-based email, you will need to copy and paste the link into an email message.
Using tickets to share files is significantly less secure than adding a user to a file because anyone can forward a ticket via email, so we do not recommend using tickets to share files that you wish to keep relatively private. For step-by-step instructions on adding users and creating tickets, visit the WebShare Documentation page. You can learn more about how to share files using WebShare tickets by watching our WebShare demonstration.
Benefits of Using WebShare to Share Files
Share large files
WebShare’s one gigabyte of free space gives you a simple way to share files that are too large to send easily via email. Instead of sending a file by email, you give a person or a group access to a file or create a ticket to send a link to the file.
Share a large group of files
WebShare allows you to share groups of files all at once, which is easier to manage for both you and your recipients! Imaging giving everyone a single location for a set of files rather than sending multiple email messages to the group.
Share files with a group that needs to work together
When you need to work as a group, use WebShare to share your group's documents. You can create a shared folder so that each group member can access the documents as needed. You can even set up subscriptions to know when someone has uploaded a new document to a shared folder or lock a file while you're making changes to it.
Share files in a secure environment
When you need to share a file containing sensitive information, do not send the file via email; instead, place it on WebShare and share a link to the file. Be sure that you give permission only to the person(s) you wish to see the file. We do not recommend using tickets to share sensitive data, because the recipient can pass on the ticket, and thus the file permissions, to another.
