Section 1: Establish Your Identity on Campus

Your CNetID

Your CNetID identifies you on the University of Chicago computer network. We recommend that you create your CNetID as soon as possible. It allows you to connect to a host of campus computing services such as email, cMore (to manage your student information), course registration, the wireless network, electronic resource, and more. It also allows you to receive important information from the Registrar, Student Services, and other University administration offices.

Your CNetID is also the prefix to your @uchicago.edu email address. For example, if your CNetID were jane, your University of Chicago email address would be jane@uchicago.edu.

The CNetID site is now open for you to begin the process. You can choose any available CNetID, but since your CNetID cannot ever be changed, we strongly recommend choosing something you'll want in the future as well as now. Think of this as the email address you'll use to apply for a job someday. When you create your CNetID, you'll also choose your CNet password. For tips on choosing a good password and keeping it secure, read our password tip sheets.

Chicago Card Your Chicago Card

Your Chicago Card is your official University identification card. You can use it for many things, including getting access to the Library and checking out library materials, storing credit for dining hall use, cashing checks at the Bursar's Office, and riding certain CTA buses for free. You'll get your Chicago Card as part of your student orientation.
